"Early War" vs. "Late War" EM shoulderboards. This causes more confusion and customer stress than any other piece of Heer insignia. First, we invented the names for easy identification for the two colors of shoulderboard bodies. (The part surrounded by the colored Waffenfarbe). Pre-war and early war shoulderboard bodies were usually made from bottle green colored wool. This matched the collars on M36 tunics. As the War progressed, shoulderboards with field gray wool bodies were phased in. This was an economy measure if nothing else. It was easier to use cutting scraps from tunics and trousers than to stock an entirely unique color for the shoulderboards.
Usage: Here's where the panic starts. Just like tunics, both types of shoulderboards were used concurrently, until the end of the conflict. There was no "turn in date" when all "Early War" boards were exchanged for "Late War" ones. That's ignorant reenactor fantasy crap. Every combination is authentic; "Early War" boards on M44 tunic, tropical tunics and M40's. "Late War" one worn on M36 and M43 tunics. It doesn't matter! There was a war on...
What to do? Pick whichever ones you like better.
