USMC P42
Camouflage Uniform
This two piece camouflage uniform was issued prior to the Tarawa landings
and is one of the most sought after Marine Corps uniforms. This is the
"first pattern uniform" used throughout most of the Pacific
campaign. Sometimes called "frogskins", both garments are
made from the same two sided camo HBT fabric as the helmet covers and
the army camouflage uniforms. Unlike the Army version, the USMC uniform
is fully reversible. The pattern and construction is similar to that
of the P41 green "utility uniform", except for some alterations
to allow the uniform to reverse and the use of press snaps instead of
tack buttons.
ATF's P42 Camouflage Uniforms: These are excellent. We
have spent 2 years developing and perfecting them. These
uniforms are contracted directly with the manufacturer and specific
to our company. Since we can no longer acquire HBT cotton in the USA
(the last mill was bought out by a company form India and closed down)
these are now made overseas. However, we have been working closely with
this company for 5 years and they know what they are doing.
Cloth: The cloth is specific to "our" US made fabric
from 5 years ago. 100% cotton herringbone twill, with the "Army"
weave. (Yes, all camouflage was printed on "Army pattern"
cloth. If you want to argue, go for it. Come see my originals and prepare
to be embarrassed.)
Color: I finally found some original, unissued fabric with a
"khakier" base color on the green side. This has been duplicated
perfectly. These will never be considered too green. Yes, this is an
"original" shade of US camo. Not some blithering nonsense
I'm making up to explain away a screw-up. The comparison photo below
is our new stuff against original WWII fabric.
There is no "one" shade of US camo. Among my originals
I have 3 fairly distinct shades in the base color of the green side.
It varies from "pea green" (like the "WT" material),
to "pale green" (the most common and like our older US made
material) to a "khaki-green" with a bit more gold or yellow
in it. The latter is the most sought after by collectors; probably because
it's closest to khaki. The pea-green shade also turns this same, more
yellow color about 5 minutes after it copulates with dirt.
And, yes, our camo it has the right number of colors, 5 on the green
side and 4 on the brown.

Pattern/ Hardware:
We used our patterns, so these are identical to our US Made uniforms
in size and fit. And we shipped the factory genuine US Made Scovil
brand zinc plated snaps, just like originals. There should be no problems
with breaking snaps.
Insignia? The P41 Utility and P42 Camouflage uniforms were NOT worn with any insignia. Rank was sometimes stenciled or draw on the sleeves, and unit markings were often stenciled on the back or chest. But red chevrons were NEVER worn on combat uniforms- nor are they today.
Washing instructions
For longest life and least fading, we recommend hand wash in cold water and hang dry for all cotton uniforms. Although these uniforms will survive washing in warm or hot water and machine drying, such actions will speed
up fading and decrease the life of the garment(s).
Note: Machine drying will result in highlighting on camouflage and canvas
items. (Highlighting amounts to light streaks where the folds in the
garment hit sides of the hot dryer.) We
strongly recommend hang drying for these items!

Helmet Covers: Unlike the Army, the Marines were issued large quantities
of matching helmet covers. These were made from the same fabric as the
camo uniforms. Click
here for helmet covers.
WRONG. Camo Caps: Farb! Camo caps were not a factory produced or standard issue item.
A handful of period caps, with reasonably good provenance do exist,
but all appear to be made by a tailor; in other words, "private
purchase" or "field made". Authenticity-wise, they are
Farb. If your unit authorizes
camo caps, they are a bunch of Farbs and if you care about your impression, you should look elsewhere...
This is one of the few times when we have acquiesced to popular demand
and made such an item. These caps are fine to wear at your wedding,
to a job interview, or a paint ball jambore, but not to a re-enactment.
RIGHT. The green P44
cap (or Army M1943 cap) is the correct soft cap to go with this uniform.
Note on "Marine Talk" or "Jarheadese"...
Please order using normal English terms!
I am already familiar with Marine-speak. However, my employees and most
of our customers were not (real) Marines and using these peculiar synonyms
will simply sow confusion and cause a shitload of trouble. We've already
had several "Marines" order "covers" and freak out
when they opened the box and found a helmet cover instead of a hat.
So, for sake of simplicity and clear communication, I will use generic,
easy-for-non-Marines to understand terms on this website. Please do
likewise. Crystal?
