Product Description

Reproduction of the WWII M43 EinheitsfeldmĂĽtze, constructed from original wool, insignia and thread. Only the lining and visor insert are new.

The wool used for these caps is the regular uniform weight cloth, in a grayish shade typical for 1943-44. It's this fabric and color that we had copied for our current Heer M43 tunics and trousers. This cloth I acquired around 2000 from a seller in California. His father was a Signal Corp veteran who's team had been tasked with collecting fabrics after the War for analysis. Naturally, some of it found it's way to his home- he had a selection of wools, gabardines and linings that I purchased. Most interesting was the fieldgray wool with Splinter printed on it, but that's another thing entirely.

Our pattern is made from a disassembled original which is why our caps fit and form properly, in contrast to many other reproductions. The visor curves correctly, the cap front isn't ridiculously high, and the peak has the fullness that allows it to lay slightly forward.

The trapezoids are unissued WWII pieces that were still on the roll. On this batch we copied the stitch used on some originals. The tops of the patches are sewn and turned back, then the sides and bottoms are stitched en masse, which leads to the side seams disappearing under the top of the caps.

Thread is also WWII Feldgrau- last year we finally acquired two cones that were still in usable condition. The only new thread is on the buttonholes- the original thread wasn't strong enough to survive that machine.

Buttonholes are 15mm keyhole type with separate bartacks. Buttons are exact reproduction.

The white binding tape under the edge of the flaps as well as the gray webbing used for the ear flaps loops are both original materials. We used scraps of original wool in other shades for the reinforcements on the backside of the flaps.

Our visor stiffeners are leather- many assume they should be cardboard but every original I have handled where the material was visible was leather. We treat it with a sealer so it doesn't stiffen if it becomes wet and dries.

Lining is 100% cotton poplin, in a gray shade matched to WWII cloth.

Made in USA.
