Product Description
Maker marks vary
Drums not included
Restored, original WWII issue German MG34/ 42
Gurttrommelträger
. These frames held 2
Gurttrommel
(belt drums) which each held 50rds. They were carried by soldiers and many vehicles had holders for them near their MG mounts.
Many of these were used after the War by various countries who continued to use the German machineguns. Most were repainted multiple times in a variety of greens, olives and OD's.
We remove the grease and cosmoline, and strip off all of the postwar paint as well as what appears to be a near bullet proof light gray primer(?) underneath. Then they're fully refinished in their original
Dunkelgrau
(dark gray/ aka "Panzer gray") which is hardened in our paint oven for 30-40 minutes. Finally we install new felt "bumpers" on the top bar.
Color:
We intentionally and randomly use 2 slightly different shades of dark gray, all of which were matched from original examples over the past 30 years by a German vehicle restoration shop. In reality, originals demonstrate a far more dramatic color range- I've encountered everything from a beige to nearly a brown.
Markings
: These carriers are all pre-43, with most being dated 1942, made by "959" (Felbeck & Pickard).
Leather pads?
I've looked at every carrier in original WWII finish that I can find- online, at shows and in my friends' collections. Not one of them had the leather on the carrying handle. The only time I see those is on the one redone by the Yugoslav army postwar. I assume the Germans didn't bother as a carrier, drums only weighs about 1/3 as much as a can full of ammo.
