Reproductions of the standard Army and Air Corps footwear of WWII, commonly called "Type 2 Service Shoes". We called them simply Service Shoes in an attempt to avoid confusing them with the Type 1's.
The service shoes were to be worn alone for garrison duty and with canvas leggings in the field.
History: Designed in the 1930's with an emphasis on comfort and good appearance, these shoes were found to be lacking in durability for field and combat use. In early 1941, the Type I's were introduced. They had thicker soles and minor improvements in construction. Despite those changes, the leather soles used on all models of service shoes were found to wear through within 2-3 weeks during hard field use. So, in the Fall of 1941, the Army switched to rubber heels and taps which became known as the Type II. Despite better shoes and boots being phased in during the War, these shoes remained prevalent throughout the conflict.
ATF's Shoes: Our reproductions are an entirely new product, exclusive to us, developed from original examples in our collection. We teamed up with an American work boot company who has production facilities overseas as we can no longer get these made in the USA. The final product is nearly indistinguishable to the previous shoes that were made here.
Made on a Munson last, with grain side out russet brown leather, cap toes with brogue holes, leather full soles and rubber heel and taps. They're correctly size stamped inside and out, with WWII contractor markings roll stamped inside.
I chose to create a retro looking ATF company logo for the heels. The other choices were leave them blank (boring), copy a WWII maker name and risk legal problems or seek out a trademark licensing agreement: been-there-done-that-hell-no-never-again. If the fact that we didn't make soles in 1941 is problematic for one's time warp, just remember that they'll wear off.
Sizes: 8-13, in half sizes, D or EE widths.
Note! The factory marked wides as "2E" rather than "EE". Annoying, but they mean the same thing.
Custom sizes not possible.
