This detachable pouch is designed to hold the mess tin (aka "meat can") on the Army and Marine Corps Haversacks. Originals are often trashed or missing and our reproductions are very difficult to distinguish from originals. Also, they were occasionally used on their own, sometimes having a shoulder strap "alternatively engineered" on them- such as a litter bearer strap.
